The Real Surreal Life

A little over an hour ago I was saying goodbye to the girl I am dating when I heard a car accident nearby. As I walked up the street towards my car I noticed the accident was right at the intersection (Vista and Fountain) that I was headed to. Although there didn't seem to be any ambulances, I could still see flashes of light that appeared to be coming from an ambulance. As I walked closer to the accident it became apparent that the lights were not, in fact, those from an ambulance, but rather . . . drum roll please . . . from paparazzi. The crash scene was peppered with these guys. This whole scene just didn't make any sense to me: There were two cars, that I could tell, that were involved in the accident - one small, black hatchback, VW golf type car and one Porsche Cayenne (an SUV), along with two other cars surrounding the scene that were either almost involved in the accident or just there to help - not too sure. About 4 guys and 1 girl were trying to pull another girl out of the small black car while, get this, the paparazzi flashed away and filmed the scene! Honestly, it took me a few minutes to put together what was happening here. I was so confused - was this a film shoot and this was a controlled accident? No, couldn't be - there wasn't enough crew for that sort of shot. What the hell are all these cameras here for??? Was this a reality tv show? Then I realized the simple answer was paparazzi. There had to have been about 6 guys snapping photos and about 4 guys filming the scene with video cameras. As I tried to comprehend the situation, the paparazzi just became more bold as time went on, leaning in closer and closer into these poor people's faces, flashing bright lights into their eyes, including the victim they were trying to help! I really could not believe this was happening! I couldn't believe that the paparazzi had the selfishness to continue bombarding these people even after they just got in an accid- wait! And that is exactly when I realized that it was most likely the paparazzi that caused this whole thing! I've never had so much disdain for these people and their "work". So, I decided to do what I could to help and got into the paparazzi's face, yelling at them and berating them for their lack of integrity, as well as, hopefully, ruining their shots. Meanwhile, the police arrived on the scene. This, of course, did not stop the paparazzi, but at this point I think I had done a fine job of fending them off. Although I never ended up being able to tell who the main victim was, who was pulled out of the car, I am sure that one of the prime targets of the paparazzi was Orlando Bloom. I overheard Orlando tell the police that there was at least one other car involved, and that it was paparazzi who were in the other cars. The paparazzi, it turns out, did indeed instigate this whole situation.

Funny thing is, just last week I ended up as a VIP guest at Area, a nightclub in West Hollywood that apparently the cast from MTV's The Hills frequents, among other celebrities. As I walked out of that club, I will admit that I felt special with all the paparazzi around (I later found out Mark Wahlberg was in there with us). I felt, this must be what it's like to be famous - not as bad as I thought. Tonight changed my opinion for sure. I feel bad for celebrities. They have no peace in public - not even in times of dire, even life-threatening, need. Odd thing is, their jobs are to entertain the public - to make our lives more enjoyable, and the thanks we offer back is "Entertain us in your personal lives too!", thereby ruining their lives to a certain extent. Moral of the story: please leave these people alone, they also deserve a certain amount of privacy.

Did Orlando seem high or drunk where you were around him? Its just in videos before the accident he was acting weird and did you see him walk away from the crash when it first happened or did the paparazzi edit the video to make it look like he left the scene at first? Cause in one video he walked away and they talked him into turning around.

Its sad that paparazzi are such vultures but if we didn't have them fan site wouldn't have the pictures they have of their favorite celebrities.

He didn't seem high or drunk. If anything, maybe a little buzzed. He never left the scene. He seemed very confused - like anyone who was just in a car accident. I don't think the argument that we need pictures of celebrities to please the fan sites is very appropriate. I think the celebrities entertain their fans enough as it is.

Thank you for your observations. I was in a fender-bender of less than 5 mph, and was surprised how confused I was afterward. I couldn't even remember my own address where I'd lived for many years. The mental fogginess lasted several months.

Mr. Bloom seems to be a good, warm-hearted man. Paps and one particular website seem intent on tearing him down.

Thank Kevin for getting back at me, no you are right there is no need of pictures from Paparazzi especially when Orlando himself does a lot of events and photo shoots. To me it just sad to see Fan sites in a big huff over this getting worked up yet when on the next page of their site they have paparazzi photos. Dont get the holier than thou attitude with the the paparazzi when they get enjoyment out of seeing pictures of him being stalked by them. Every fan has to think twice at what they are doing and see that the price of their worship does feed the need for these type of people. If no one watched ET or E! or bought magazines with paparazzi photos than there wouldn't be a need for them. Also Celebrities need to stop using them for press because once you utilize them and then want to get rid of them you cant. Orlando has used the paparazzi a lot for press. Half of middle America would still think he was some wooden pirate side kick to Johnny Depp, if it wasn't for tabloid magazines reporting his love life. The whole industries has to rethink the whole paparazzi bit before something really bad happens.

Mr. Bloom has several websites that refuse to use paparazzi pictures or videos depicting him in stress.

Those sites that do jump on every pap report/picture seem to be the sicker in terms of obsessive fans and include more sexual fantasies. I don't know what can be done about sad, lonely people. When we figure this out, there won't be any more paparazzi.

Yeah, Orlando is in Florida. Or is he?

Hi! I just want to thank you for telling your account on this "nasty" event. I'm sure those who didn't believe he wasn't high or drunk,etc... will think again before judging again. THANK YOU!

and to Ellen...I'm one of those fans who has a site where we do not allow pap pics.U know I think he does enough for u,we do not need to "follow" him around during his private time.

thank you for sharing your side of the incident.

there is no denying that it was the paparazzi's fault. instead of helping in the incident they made it worse. they just wanted to smear Bloom's good image.

Hey there... I've heard a lot gushing about whether Orlando was somehow stoned or not. To me he seems to have been in a mental shock or something like that. It makes people act in a weird way as one is worried about friends and their wellbeing. Besides, a report from a police officer, or something (I read that over a report) said Orlando wasn't drunk and he wasn't speeding. We outsiders can only guess at what truly happened. I, myself, won't get judgmental right from the start... Just some thoughts from me...

Kevin, thank you so much for your report. There has been so much criticism and speculation out there about this incident - from people who know nothing about it.

gibson, I agree with most of what you said, except about Orlando ‘using’ the paparazzi. He’s been as cordial as possible to them, but I don’t think he’s been the instigator when photos just happened to be taken of him at a restaurant or shop. The photo agencies pay for the chance to take these photos, and a lot of waiters and shop owners (and, yes, some performers) supplement their income that way.

I run an Orlando fan site and we do not allow what are commonly referred to as 'paparazzi' photos, but more specifically candid photos when he's on his own time, living his life. (The argument of 'as long as he doesn't appear upset' is, well, lame.) I was unfortunate enough to witness these people stalking him after a TV appearance, and they coordinate with chase cars and cell phones among each other - and were even bragging about catching someone (by staking out their home) in what could be construed as a compromising position. They are stalkers, pure and simple – and feel they have a sense of entitlement to follow these people around because they are in the ‘public eye’. Yes, I watched small bits of a couple of the videos from Thursday night, and was sickened and upset by the disgusting behavior of these people. They certainly didn’t care that someone was injured – but they got a dumpload of photos, didn’t they? And are proud of it.

'Paparazzi' used to mean those who take photos at public events such as premieres, charity events, etc. - that is expected (and courted) by those in show business. And for so many fans, that is enough – but not photos that intrude on his private life. I wish I knew the answer as to how to put these scumbags out of business, but there will always be those who have a fascination with celebrity, which keeps the tabloid press and television in business.

I disagree with Gibson about the public not knowing anything about Orlando if it weren't for his love life. People remember you and recognize you if you appear on tv or in a movie anywhere. For example, my sister was the subject of one of those makeover shows and people recognize her all the time and compliment her or ask her questions. And it wasn't even a really well-known show! Orlando's been in several of the highest-grossing pictures of all time and wouldn't need the help.

Also, I agree with the last anonymous commenter. I once met a couple of REAL paparazzi at a There were in position to take photos long before the event started, standing in the hot sun, so I offered to get them cold drinks and chatted with them for a while. They think the stalker paparazzi are sleazy and unprofessional. One told me that he doesn't even like to use pictures that he takes of people through their car windows.
